Immerse yourself in the vibrant tradition of Ummathat, the graceful and energetic folk dance of the Kodava (Coorg) community from Kodagu district, Karnataka, India. 💃✨
The Ummathat dance is one of the oldest and most celebrated art forms of the Kodavas — performed exclusively by women dressed in the traditional Kodava sari, adorned with jewelry, and holding small brass cymbals called “Thaalas.”
🌿 About Ummathat Dance
Ummathat is a symbol of devotion, unity, and joy. Traditionally performed during festivals, temple celebrations, and weddings, it is dedicated to Goddess Cauvery, the river goddess revered by the Kodavas. The dancers move in perfect rhythm, forming circles and synchronizing their steps for the beats of Thaalas
The term “Ummathat” comes from the flower “Ummathe,” which grows in Coorg and is considered sacred. The dance represents the spirit of the Kodava women — strong, graceful, and deeply connected to nature and tradition.
