Weight Training for Runners (Pt.1) - • Weight Training for Distance Runners (Pt. 1)
Head Coach of the Kenya Experience running camps, Hugo van den Broek, gives a detailed guide to weight training for distance runners.
In this video (part 2) Hugo and Collins demonstrate the lunge exercise which is a fantastic exercise for runners to incorporate into strength training routines. The lunge helps to strengthen the glutes, hamstrings and quadriceps in a way that is very specific to the dynamic movement of running. We teach our muscles to be reactive to the ground by forcefully pushing off the floor in a fast but controlled way.
By adding some weight we can make the exercise more challenging and by increasing the amount of weight we use as time goes on we can make the exercise progressive.
There are many other forms of strength training which can be utilised by distance runners and we will discuss these in future videos!
