Meet Richard Johnson, a former Navy dentist whose service journey began on August 1, 1971, at the Naval Training Center (NTC) in San Diego. Joining as a lieutenant in the dental corps during the Vietnam War, Johnson's primary mission was to ensure troops were deployment-ready, treating recruits to prevent dental emergencies while in the fleet. Working in a setting that resembled a blend of military academy and college campus, he fondly recalls the architectural beauty and vibrant athletic culture at NTC. From memorable tennis tournaments to a funny moment when he had to leave mid-treatment for his son’s birth, Johnson reflects warmly on his time at NTC and appreciates its transformation into Liberty Station today.
