Timna Park is located in the southernmost desert of Israel, near Egypt and the Red Sea. The rock art in the area was engraved around the 14th-12th centuries BCE, during the Ramesside dynasty of the New Kingdom of Egypt and illustrates Egyptian soldiers deployed in the region and local miners engaging in hunting scenes.
The soldiers are driving chariots, hold weapons such as axes and swords, shields, and hunters can also be seen using boomerangs and lassoes. The animals that they hunt are of the local fauna, such as ibexes (wild mountain goats), oryxes (antelope species), or ostriches. Some scenes show dogs participating in the hunt.
Such an organized form of hunting, using chariots, and guiding local wildlife into what were probably desert kites (large kite-shaped outdoor enclosures) kept the Egyptian soldiers in the area occupied in training routine.
