Stunning sunrise; Halnaker Windmill Trail & Boxgrove Priory

Join us on a frosty morning for sunrise on Halnaker Hill in West Sussex; then a fabulous winter walk from Boxgrove Priory along the Halnaker Windmill Trail. Halnaker is located approximately 5 miles north east of Chichester and 10 miles west of Arundel.

Due to its cinematic nature, this video is best watched on a large screen, such as a TV, to fully appreciate the visual detail and immersive aural experience we try to convey.

Initially, we parked the car in the tiny car park just off the A285 at the bottom of Halnaker Hill. It was still dark but we wanted to catch the sunrise over the mill. Having watched and filmed this, we descended back to the car, catching the Red kites in the early morning sunshine.

We then drove to Boxgrove where we parked in the village hall car park. A short walk from there is Boxgrove Priory. The Priory was built in the C12, although a church had existed on the site since Anglo Saxon times.
Remaining today is the Priory Church of St Mary and St Blaise which has been in use since the C12, and the remains of the C14 priory lodging house, where the Prior entertained his guests and travellers could find lodgings.

Although the western part of the original monastic church, the chapter house, cloisters and other monastic buildings have been lost over time, the church remains a fine example of Norman and Gothic architecture, with more than a trace of the original monastic buildings still evident.

We then made our way along the Windmill Trail. Skirting the edge if Tinwood vineyard, we headed north east toward the Halnaker tree tunnel, which forms part of the ancient Stane Street - the Roman road from London to Chichester.

We then headed up Halnaker Hill to the 18C tower mill that is Halnaker Mill. A mill has stood on the site since the 16C but the current building is obviously later. In late 2021, the sweeps (sails) were removed for refurbishment, and sadly had not been reinstalled at the time of our walk.

Then a slightly easier return to Boxgrove. We, of course, filmed as much nature as possible throughout, but at this time of year most things are asleep.

We ascended and descended Halnaker Hill twice! All in all, a very long day of walking and filming, especially for our little dog who had to be carried much of the way!
