NTA UGC NET ENGLISH 2025 IMPERSONALITY THEORY OF POETRY/TS ELIOT/TRADITION AND THE INDIVIDUAL TALENT

The video gives a short and simple explanation on TS Eliot's Theory of Impersonality of poetry . This theory is taken from his well known essay Tradition and the Individual Talent . The essay is published in a literary journal The Egoist in 1919 and later on in his first book of criticism The Sacred Wood in 1920. This essay is divided into 3 sections. In the first section Eliot gives the concept of Tradition. In the second part he explains his Impersonality theory of poetry and finally he sums up the whole discussion. He further explains this theory by giving an example of a chemical reaction in which sulphur dioxide and oxygen combines to form sulphurous acid.
Eliot advocated this theory as an attack on Romantic views of self expression. Wordsworth's famous definition of poetry that peotry is the " spontaneous overflow of poweful feelings, takes its origin in emotions recollected in tranquility" is rejected by Eliot because according to him "poetry is not the turning loose of emotion but an escape from emotion, it is not an expression of personality but an escape from personality". He considers Self Expression in poetry imprecise. According to him art should not be an expression of self or personal sentiments rather it should be impersonal or an expression of universal truths. Eliot hence is against the subjectivity of the Romantics and stresses on objectivity in poetry.
