By request, I made this flu-torial to show the finger positions for this popular tune on a 5-hole Native American-style flute.
In general, most things that you can play on a 6-hole flute will be playable on a 5-hole flute as well. Some adjustments to the fingerings are all that is required.
I mentioned in the video that during the first phrase of the song ("Are you going to Scarborough Fair?"), the top hole remains closed, so the index finger of the left hand doesn't move. Although I didn't mention it, it should be obvious the left-hand ring finger also remains stationary throughout the entire song because it acts to support the flute. It's the same space on the flute that accommodates the additional hole on a 6-hole flute.
Sorry if some of the upper register notes sound a little harsh. It's because I played the flute very close to the camera to facilitate showing the fingerings.
The instrument here is an eastern cedar G minor and was made by Paul Jones of Taos, New Mexico. It's one of his "Apache" flutes and has a suitably earthy tone.
