Location: Station Approach, Saxmundham
Trains:
Class 755 (Greater Anglia) - 1:09
Lowestoft ➡ Ipswich
A level crossing located next to Saxmundham Station, one of two level crossings located as little as 100 yards apart on the same line within the Market Town of Saxmundham in East Suffolk. This level crossing is controlled by the signal box next to it which is the signalling centre for the East Suffolk Line, and this signal box also controls and monitors the Chantry Road Level Crossing remotely as that level crossing is also clearly within the signal box's line of sight. A lot of East Anglian architecture surrounds this level crossing, which wasn't lowered until the featured Ipswich-bound train was ready to leave the station after being stopped here for around four minutes prior.
As is the case with nearby Chantry Road Level Crossing, the four barriers here were renewed to newer SPX variants with supporter arms in late 2020, though the alarms at both level crossings have remained un-changed. The alarms at this level crossing make quite a lot of noise for a relatively quiet back street environment as the barriers are lowered, and these can clearly be heard from the surrounding streets. One of the wigwags here is thin as it is squeezed up against one of the nearby houses in a tight space at the entrance to the Lowestoft-bound platform.
The station building in the background was still undergoing repair works at the time of filming, as it was damaged by a devastating fire in 2018.
Thanks for watching!
