Sewing a reusable Sanitary pad — The Pachamama Project flying saucer version

Another instructional sewing video!

This time a quick little video showing you how you can sew a reusable Sanitary pad for the Pachamama Project which sends them off to refugees.

You'll need

Clean cotton fabric (preferably not just white or cream)
Dark coloured anti-pil fleece
Towels (any colour is fine)
Kam snaps
Kam snap tool

Instructions

Firstly contact the lovely people at the project/join the Facebook group where you can download the pattern and also instructions.

Cut out the large shape in cotton and one in fleece.

Now cut out the smaller piece in fleece and towel

Sew together the two smaller pieces (of towel and fleece) and trim off any excess towel

Using the guide, align the small piece of fleece with towel to the back of the large piece of fleece, ensuring the towel is the side facing the large piece.

Now sew together the two large pieces with right sides together, the wrong side of the fleece being the bit where you can see the attached smaller pieces. Make sure to leave a gap in your sewing so you can turn it out, and use a 1cm seam allowance here.

Trim back the seam allowances and turn, use a chopstick to help if you need it.

Iron the cotton side so it sits neatly, now top stich around the edge 3-5mm from the actual edge, making sure to catch in the gap that needed sewing.

Now mark out the points for kam snaps 1-1.5cm from the edge on the wings.

Check it can actually do up before smooshing them (make sure you get them the right way round)

Use the kam snap tool to secure them in place, placing the flat ends on the slightly curved plastic side of the snap tool.

Make sure they snap together and don't come off when undoing them!

If the snaps stay in place you've finished!

These pads are created to try and help with period poverty with those that need it the most, as having to choose between food or sanitary products is not fair on anyone!
