The history of the battleship Littorio 🇮🇹
The Littorio was the lead ship of her class in the Italian Regia Marina during World War II. Launched in 1937 and commissioned in 1940, she was armed with nine 381 mm (15-inch) guns and featured advanced Pugliese underwater protection. Littorio took part in several Mediterranean naval operations, including the battles of Sirte and escort missions for Axis convoys. She sustained damage during British air raids on Taranto and later during Allied bombings. Renamed Italia in 1943 after Italy’s armistice, she was interned in Malta and eventually dismantled after the war, marking the end of Italy’s great battleship era.
