Is It Ok To Mix Hard Waxes?

Is it ok to mix hard waxes, or any hair removal waxes? Is that going to affect or alter the wax and the performance of the wax?

Yes and No. This is really a “what works for me” type of situation. If it works for you, then yes, go ahead and mix your hard wax. However, if you’re here because you want to know from an “expert” (hate saying that about myself) what are the pros & cons of doing so, allow me to explain why this is mostly a “No.”

However, first let’s begin with when mixing hard waxes is always a yes, no matter what you’ve heard. When the wax your mixing is the same exact formulation less the colorants, (for the example I’ll use today, Mermaid Wax, this would be the same “Series.”), it’s 100% a YES! As a matter of fact, I love mixing hard waxes! Why? Well, mostly because it’s fun. It’s fun to create your own colors, create your own concoctions, it’s fun to just create! Even when you cross formulations, it can be fun. This is where I must infer, this might be a “No” for most of you.

For some the entire point is to create a new, custom wax, not just a custom color. Waxers who mix wax formulations do so because, for them, mixing two waxes will make their wax texture perfect and perform as they need it to. More times than I can count, I’ve heard that those who mix Pro & Signature hard wax do so for the “pull” of Pro & the elasticity of Signature. That’s not for me, but hey, whatever works for you. You're the boss at the end of the day and let’s keep in mind, we’re all in different environments. The conditions and wax will perform differently because of that. It’s very different to wax someone in a hot, humid environment, versus a cold dry one so you might want to mix or alter how you wax based on that alone. There’s countless factors that make YOUR situation unique.

Now, why do I say “NO, do not mix waxes!?” From someone who has created different formulations based on ingredients and my own experiences coupled with using other companies' waxes, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I thought the formulations I’ve created at Mermaid Wax are perfect on their own. Prior to Mermaid Wax, the only wax I experienced (or even was aware of) was a Rosin-based wax, cue European Wax Center. Pretty much everyone, including myself, LOVED their wax. That wax (a rosin based polymer blend) is almost exactly like the Mermaid Wax Pro Series. And basically the same as every major brand’s blue or pink film hard waxes. There’s actually very few waxes out there that aren’t essentially the same, “Rosin” based waxes. The formulation was developed in the 1980’s, kind of old technology. Again, I didn’t even know that anything like the Signature Series or Experimental Series could be created, until they were. Once we did, I fell in love with the super elasticity of the waxes which allowed me to lay 3, 4, 5, or more strips at a time without any fear of them breaking. Once we made Signature and later Experimental Series, I never went back to waxes like the Pro Series.

But that’s just me! 50% of the people who buy Mermaid Wax LOVE the Pro Series, and that’s great. This just proves that we’re all different and have different desires and needs.

To get serious for a second, if you mix hard waxes that have completely different bases and formulations, it can and will alter the performance of the wax.

For example, most hard waxes (especially polymer blend waxes) will have an ingredient called Colophonium (Rosin), which is a known allergen. Not good for sensitive skin. Also, most of these waxes are not vegan friendly due to them containing beeswax.

Then there’s the newest technology in hair removal wax, “synthetic waxes” (like the Signature Series and Experimental Series) which don’t contain Colophonium or beeswax so they’re hypoallergenic and vegan friendly. These waxes are a much higher quality and are formulated for someone with sensitive skin, although they can be used on anyone.

If you mix the Signature and Experimental Series with the Pro Series, mixing these two waxes is going to make the overall wax not hypoallergenic and vegan friendly due to the rosin base and beeswax. But if that doesn’t bother you, then who cares?!
