Cornell Astronomical Society's second lecture of Fall 2025, hosted by Alexia Kubas: We Have [Insert Planet Name] At Home: The Amazing World of Analog Studies
With limited budgets and competing scientific priorities, it is impossible to send dedicated missions to every fascinating world in our Solar System. Even the lucky few missions that get selected require years (if not decades!) of patience before we start receiving data. In the meantime, we can turn to our own planet to learn about extreme environments far beyond Earth. Analog science allows us to study planetary processes without leaving the stratosphere—preparing us for future missions while deepening our understanding of the Earth system. In this talk, Alexia will highlight how Earth-based research, especially in the polar regions, reveals new insights into hydrology and astrobiology on cold, icy planets across the Solar System.
