*EBENS HEAD TRAIL Video Guide*
Coastal Cliffs & Stone Beaches...
what a Maine National Park should be
Of all the trails in Acadia, EBENS HEAD TRAIL on Isle au Haut has views and terrain that epitomize the feel of coastal Maine that the beauty of Mount Desert Island is too unique to provide. The raw beauty and feel of this trail are more like western National Park, with the terrain of coastal Maine.
If a picture is worth 1000 words...what's a video worth?

Beginning on Park Road 20 yards up from the southern trailhead of DUCK HARBOR TRAIL, EBENS HEAD TRAIL begins heading through the forest toward the west coast of Isle au Haut. Approaching the coast a short berm precedes a set of bog boards that lead out of the forest to the northern shore of Duck Harbor. Here the trail runs perilously close to the six foot drop to the stone shore & beaches and then through tall grass & wild berries. A view of the Boat Landing across the harbor makes it appear closer than the ~1.1 walk to it from the northern trailhead.
Briefly re-entering a stand of trees a side trail runs up to the top of Ebens Head. Climbing up some uncertain footing brings more views of Duck harbor and a first views across Isle au Haut & East Penobscot Bays. Returning to the main trail, a path through a few more trees leads to the a first stone beach. Across this a climb up uneven granite goes to the western cliffs of Isle au Haut. Expected safeguards as on Mount Desert Island are not found here. Uneven footing and steep unprotected drops may be challenging as the trail weave out to the cliffside and back into the trees a few times before becoming a stretch of rocky cliff and eventually desending to a 2nd beach.
Midway along the beach a sign (and perhaps a life jacket) shows where the trail continues. Here it heads back toward the interior of Isle au Haut and Park Road. Arriving at Park Road the trail is done but there is still ~1.1 mi walk on roads to the Duck Harbor Dock or campground. An additional option of visiting Sharks Point Beach is ~0.2 mi in the opposite direction so check the time and do that if you can. Personal opinion: IT'S WORTH IT!!!
I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to
ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ... wicked awesome!
FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN...
the best times are had when planned properly.
Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia...
your hiking plan can include them as contingencies.
Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe...
cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park.
Remember: know your limits so you can push them,
and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you...
AND if you enjoy the tour, your guide does accept likes, subscriptions and comments...
(an option of leaving a tip: ie a link for actual tips through patreon is likely coming soonish).
