CLIFF TRAIL is the best you will get on Isle au Haut!!!
"Manicured" being a relative term as Isle au Haut is the more rugged
of the 4 Acadia National Park areas: MDI, Bar Island, Schoodic & IaH.

CLIFF TRAIL is arrived at via Western Head Road which can be taken immediately from the Boat Landing at Duck Harbor, or via GOAT TRAIL after hiking on other parts of the island. The flat grass, dirt & gravel road leads mildly to the trailhead. From the trailhead pass through prickly berry stalks to arrive at wood tiered dirt steps that rise to the clifftop trail.

The early clifftop trail has incredible views and stable footing. After this, a stone step and granite rock descent leads to a lower cliff. Here the trail winds in and out of trees, exiting multiple times to reveal coastal views. Descending once more, it arrives at the coastline where a stone cove will inevitably have a variety of stray fishing gear. Next, the hike turns inland into woods with trees covered with moss & lichen finally exiting on another stone beach.

Turning inland once more the trail rises up, teasing another coastal glimpse but not revealing it. Arrival at WESTERN HEAD TRAIL ends this trail, but a short side trail down to Western Ear gives an incredible coastal view from water-level, and offers fun wandering options at low tide over toa and around Western Ear.

A word about Fred the ant... this ant kept showing up in the raw video... I can only assume it's the same one... and he shows up at the best places... but I think he's staying on IaH to be with Ginger... quite the ant, that one... and Fred straight climbed up like Romeo to his Juliet... keep your eyes peeled for other appearances as this was the final hike of the project... he definitely appeared earlier... we'll see where as I continue to edit.
