ABOUT ADDIS ABABA
Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia and the African Union and is repeatedly called the "African Capital" due to its historical, diplomatic, and political significance for the continent. The City was founded in 1886, by Emperor Menelik II, at the site of a hot spring chosen by Empress Taytu Bitul. It is located in the geographic center of the country. Standing 2,355 meters above sea level, it is the third highest capital in the world. This historically significant city in its enchanting mountain setting is recognized as one of the world¹s most fascinating and beautiful cities. Addis Ababa has an estimated population of about 7 million and an eight percent annual growth rate. Each of the country's multitude of ethnic groups is represented somewhere in the capital, as are many foreign residents from all parts of the world who contribute to the city's cosmopolitan atmosphere. Amharic, the national language, is widely spoken throughout the country and is predominant in Addis Ababa. The principal foreign language is English, but you will also find many people who speak French, Italian, and Arabic. Ethiopia is often called the origin of humankind due to various hominid fossil discoveries such as the Australopithecine "Lucy". Recent DNA evidence suggested, After analyzing the DNA of almost 1,000 people around the world, that humans originated and spread from around what is now Addis Ababa 100,000 years ago. The fossilized skeleton, and a plaster replica of the early hominid Lucy (known in Ethiopia as Dinkinesh) is one of the numerous preserved hominid skeletons at the Ethiopian National Museum in Addis Ababa. Addis has more than enough history and sights to warrant more than just a stopover. Historian Carlo Conti Rossini once characterized Ethiopia as a “rich cultural mosaic”.
