Thoughtful Approach to Maximize Networking and Job Seeking Opportunities

As the saying goes, “who you know gets you the job, but what you know keeps your job” is often a statement that runs true for many jobseekers. There are ways you can promote your brand but it generally takes a thoughtful and systematic approach to obtain positive networking outcomes. Understanding what companies are looking for
in an employee is paramount to obtaining a position, but this is truly a two-way street. You must also understand what your expectations are for your future employers. This talk will explore some self-evaluations that will hopefully help you with effective networking strategies, and to design impactful cover letters, resumes, and elevator speeches.
Bruce Yoshioka, came to Colorado School of Mines just over ten years ago as the department’s Laboratory Coordinator following four years in the same position at the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Mr. Yoshioka has a BS in Land Use Geology but has “found his calling” in working directly with undergraduate and graduate students in both academic and research capacities. Besides his laboratory and teaching activities, he can be found promoting the Department of Mining Engineering at campus recruiting functions and national mining +related educational outreach programs. Mr. Yoshioka is currently a member of the
Society for Mining Metallurgy & Exploration, American Exploration & Mining Association, and former President and Vice President for NecroSearch International. He has a rather varied background with service in the U.S. Army, Field Support Analyst with General Dynamics conducting hardness testing on intercontinental ballistic missile systems, and a Corporate Sales Trainer and District Outside Sales Manager for IBS, Inc.
