【JP & English Sub】A Walk Through Tokyo’s Past: Ryogoku, Nihonbashi, Tokyo Station

In this video, I walk through Ryogoku, Kodemmacho, Nihonbashi, and Tokyo Station to explore how Tokyo evolved from the Edo period to the modern city we see today.

🏯 Ryogoku

Known as the heart of sumo culture since the Edo period.
It was once a major entertainment district where samurai and common people gathered.
Today, Ryogoku still preserves its traditional atmosphere with sumo stables and the Ryogoku Kokugikan.

⛓ Kodemmacho

An important administrative area during the Edo period.
It was home to one of Edo’s main prison complexes, where criminals were detained and executed.
Now a quiet business district, the area still holds memorials that reflect Tokyo’s darker historical past.

🌉 Nihonbashi

The starting point of all major roads in Edo Japan and the symbolic center of the country.
It flourished as a merchant district and economic hub.
Today, Nihonbashi blends history with modern business, luxury shops, and long-established stores.

🚉 Tokyo Station

Opened in 1914, Tokyo Station represents modern Japan.
Its red-brick building is a historic landmark, while the station itself functions as one of the busiest transportation hubs in the country.

By walking this route, you can experience the transition from
Edo-era neighborhoods → commercial centers → modern Tokyo,
making it a perfect way to learn Tokyo’s history on foot.

今回は、両国・小伝馬町・日本橋・東京駅を歩きながら、
東京がどのように江戸から現代へと変わってきたのかを辿る散策をしました。

🏯 両国（りょうごく）

江戸時代から続く相撲の街として知られるエリア。
江戸最大級の歓楽地でもあり、武士や庶民の文化が交差する場所でした。
現在も国技館や相撲部屋が残り、下町の雰囲気と伝統文化を強く感じられます。

⛓ 小伝馬町（こでんまちょう）

江戸幕府の重要な行政エリアで、**牢屋敷（ろうやしき）**があった場所。
罪人の処刑や取り調べが行われた、江戸の“影の歴史”を持つ町です。
現在はオフィス街ですが、史跡や案内板から当時の重い歴史を感じることができます。

🌉 日本橋（にほんばし）

江戸時代、日本全国の道路の起点となった「日本の中心」。
商人の町として栄え、物流・経済の中心地でした。
現在も老舗百貨店や企業が集まり、伝統とビジネスが共存する街です。

🚉 東京駅

近代日本の象徴ともいえる駅で、1914年に開業。
赤レンガの駅舎は東京の歴史を象徴する建築で、
現在は新幹線や在来線が集まる、日本最大級の交通の拠点です。

このルートを歩くことで、
江戸の下町 → 商人の町 → 近代国家 → 現代東京
という、東京の歴史の流れを体感できます。
