Svartifoss, Mulagljufur Canyon, and Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon / Best Day hikes in Southern Iceland

Day 4 of our Iceland Ring Road Itinerary. Today we visit Laufskálavarða, Laki Fissures, Skaftafell National Park, Svartifoss, Mulagljufur Canyon, and Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. We Hike two of the best easy day hikes in the south of Iceland, the Svartifoss trail and the trail to Mulaglijufur Canyon.

Svartifoss-Sjónarsker Trail Hike: 3.3 miles
This fantastic trail will show you several waterfalls in Skaftafell. First you go in direction of Lambhagi to reach the Svartifoss waterfall. Svartifoss is surrounded by dark lava columns which gave rise to his name. Fantastic basalt Columnar next to the waterfall. After that you will see a second waterfall called Magnúsarfoss and it's the smallest of the 3 waterfalls and a last one called Hundafoss, which is the tallest. The path then goes to the Sjónarsker mountain that offers you incredible views.

Mulaglijufur Canyon Hike: 3.6 miles
Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 18 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are May through October. Hangandifoss is one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls and offers you amazing views. It's part of the Múlagljúfur canyon with several other waterfalls.

Múlagljúfur offers amazing nature like canyons, rivers, waterfalls, volcanoes and breathtaking views. Múlaá, which is fed from the snow covered volcano Öræfajökull, runs through Múlagljúfur canyon and past Hangandi waterfall.
