00- INTRO* Today let’s explore the famous city of Tacoma located in WA state. Let’s check out the Glass Museum, the boardwalk, and the marina. So join me, only on the Epic Travel Adventures.
37 – The city of Tacoma is about 30 miles south of Seattle. Tacoma, with the population of over 221 thousand people as of 2021 is the third largest city by population in Washington State with Spokane being the second largest and Seattle the largest.
54 – This interesting cone structure completed in 2001 is known as the “Landing” or the Hot-Shop Cone. The Hot-Shop provides residencies for the artists to stay at and is a part of the Tacoma Glass Museum or the Museum of Glass. Inside of the museum you can watch or even participate in glass blowing and glass casting. The Museum is a 75,000 sq. foot art museum that was founded in 2002 and is located on the Dock St.
27 – Up the stairs we come up to the Chihuly Bridge of Glass named after the Tacoma native glass sculptor Dale Chihuly. The bridge was opened in 2002 and spans above the Interstate-705 and connects downtown Tacoma to the Glass Museum. As we walk through this 500-foot bridge you will notice lots of beautiful and unique glass sculptures on both sides as well as the ceiling. The sculptures assembly on the sides is known as the Venetian Wall housing 109 individual showcases. It is an 80-foot-long installation. At night, the walls are illuminated by fiber-optic lights.
49 – At the end of the bridge you will see two Crystal Towers resembling turquoise rock candy. The Towers are 40-foot-tall and were completed in 2002.
52 – The red brick building with a copper dome in the distance is the Union Station built in 1910. It was used for the city’s first rail station. In 1974 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it is a courthouse of the US District Court.
25 – Heading back through the Chihuly Bridge, the glass sculptures gallery on the ceiling is known as the Seaform Pavilion. It contains 2,364 pieces of beautiful marine-life inspired glass. The ceiling is over 49-feet long.
46 – Did you know that Tacoma was named after the Mount Rainier which is also known as Tacoma or Tahoma? In the late 19th century, Tacoma became the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad and as a result was known as the City of Destiny.
19 – This is the Dock Street Marina with the Foss Waterway boardwalk and the Thea Foss Waterway. Thea Foss Waterway eventually connects into the Puget Sound which links to the Pacific Ocean. By the way, along the boardwalk you will notice a lot of newly built apartments, restaurants, and businesses. I love this area as that it has a nice and relaxing ambient atmosphere with places to eat, walk, and gaze at some beautiful views. What could be better?
52 – The George Weyerhaeuser park was opened in 2009. George Weyerhaeuser was Tacoma’s civic booster who developed city’s Thea Foss Waterway and the waterfront.
08 – ENDING* Next let’s walk the Thea Foss Waterway boardwalk all the way to the end and explore all the beauty that comes with it. Stay tuned for some of the most amazing views that we are about to discover ONLY on the Epic Travel Adventures.
