Kanneliya is a unique ecosystem located in the Galle District of Sri Lanka. It is considered one of the biodiversity hotspots in the region. This reserve belongs to the Kanneliya-Dediyagala-Nakiyadeniya forest complex. This entire forest complex covers an area of nearly sq. km. 101.4. It was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 2004 by UNESCO. The Kanneliya Reserve is one part of it.
Until 1988, state-sponsored logging took place in this area. Remains of roads and buildings built for this purpose can still be seen in the forest.
The Narangas Ella Trail is considered to be the longest tourist trail in Kanneliya, with a total distance of about 14 km. It is possible to see many other important tourist attractions in Kanneliya along the way. Among them the Bat Cave, Anagimala Ella, and the Giant Navanda Tree are prominent. Once a popular attraction, the giant ‘Pus’ creeper has now been destroyed due to irresponsible tourism.
If you are traveling on the Narangas Ella Trail, it is important to pick a fairly dry period. It is also essential to start the journey early in the morning.
