There was a threat to the slave regime by the existence of Haiti. But you don't get Haiti without the American Revolution, because you don't get the French Revolution. At least not when it happens, how it happens.
And so the American Revolution kicks off an age of democratic revolutions that's going to shape and transform the world and give us both the language and the imagination to believe that people can govern themselves on large scales. It gives us the language that helps us destroy the institution of slavery. It helps us raise up the idea of humanity. It ultimately gives a different notion to women's freedom and opportunities as well.(...) And so I think the myopic view these guys were hypocrites, and look at how they saddled this country with all this baggage.
The baggage was there. And it's true. We inherit their values as well baggage. It certainly is a part of who we are. But freedom was never about perfection. It was about the ability to control your own future. And that's what they've given us.
