Here's Part 3 of Justin's Peugeot 305 Restoration, in this video you'll see me removing all of the seam seal, underseal, wax, paint, rust and you'll see my sandblasting (garnet) learning experience.
To start, removed all coatings and as much rust mechanically from both sides of the floorpan, the wheel arches and the front chassis legs. It was a long, loud and messy process using a combination of twist knot wire wheels and crimped wire wheels in both a drill and angle Grinder. I found that the rapid strip paint and rust discs were fantastic at removing paint and rust on large areas.
Once the majority of the underseal was removed I set about treating the worst of the rust using a product called DEOX-G which is a gel rust remover from Bilt Hamber. Hands down the DEOX-G is the best rust remover I've ever experienced, the way it works, the cool colours and patterns under the cling film whilst it's working and the satisfaction when you wash off a sludgy mess to find bright steel waiting for you underneath!
As I wanted to make sure this restoration lasts, and any primers would adhere well I took the decision to Buy a second hand blast pot (sandblaster) and a 25kg bag of Aluminium silicate media to get me started with. It soon became clear that the blaster needed some improvements and that the Aluminium silicate media was spent and dusty quite quickly. So I made the decision to switch my media to Garnet Medium 30/60 media and make the necessary improvements to the blaster. It helped having the blaster on the table to give a little gravity feed, and almost every refill required 50kg of garnet crystals to be carefully sieved through - I managed to find a nice balance between media flow, air flow, regulated pressure and compressor pressure - it was necessary to take regular breaks to let the compressor catch up as the blasting was pretty ineffective below ~50psi and to take a breather.
Once the blasting was complete I took some time to blow as much blasting media out of the hollows of the sills, pillars, arches and so on before heating the workshop to a toasty 18 Degree Celsius so I could apply Bilt Hamber Electrox Zinc rich coating which is designed for offshore applications and extreme duty vehicle chassis. The product was very nice to work with and doesn't take long at all to dry - You can see in the video that it dries following me from left to right. Electrox can be left uncovered or can be over coated with other products (such as seam seal, stone chip) and is fine to use 'as you go' meaning I can apply it before to stop any rust forming and then again on new materials once I start welding.
