Bassett-Lowke was a toy company in Northampton, England, founded by Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke in 1899, that specialized in model railways, boats and ships, and construction sets. Bassett-Lowke started as a mail-order business, although it designed and manufactured items following WW1
In 1964, the company ceased retail sales and sold its shops, including one at High Holborn in London, to Beatties. Bassett-Lowke formally went out of business in 1965.
Today the name Bassett-Lowke is mostly associated with detailed model trains
This model Traction engine was purchased in the early 60’s by my Grandfather in reading, Berks, UK. It was mostly built but had some issues so My Grandfather sent it to Basset-Lowke in London who finished the build off and returned it fully functional. I remember him steaming it up for my brother and myself a few times and would always look at it in wonder as it sat on display in Granddad’s living room.
In the 90’s I inherited the engine. I was moving round Europe for work over the next 20 years and the engine mostly lived in a box but I always wanted to strip and check/clean it. At one point around 2010 I partially stripped it with the intention of restoring it but ran out of energy and partially reassembled it with parts of the structure stripped of paint.
In 2019 I decided to finally take the plunge and fully strip Granddad’s engine and restore it to the engine I remembered so fondly.
Over the years some small fasteners & fittings were lost but nothing I couldn’t source or make myself and after some time I was relieved to finally have the engine back together Once more.
