Some of the world's best hikes require climbers to ascend to very high altitudes in order to summit. For those of us who are susceptible to altitude sickness, this can make hikes like this extremely difficult. This is especially so if you are like us and you live at sea level. Going directly from low elevation to a high altitude hike drastically increases your risk of altitude sickness, and may even prevent you from reaching your summit goals. But over the years we have developed strategies to reduce altitude sickness, and this has allowed us to successfully hike extremely high elevation hikes like Mt. Whitney and Mt. Kilimanjaro. So, how do we train for high altitude hikes and climbs like these, and prevent altitude sickness?
