Spearfishing for Squid - with a Shark inspired twist

On a beautiful day I headed out to a location I haven't gone to for a while. Came across a rather large shoal of medium to large squid (100+), so thought I'd get some calamari! By the end, the hunter had become the hunted.

A very decent sized bronze whaler shark had picked up the squid scent. When I first saw the shark, it was moving fast. Like lightning fast. Darting towards my dive floats stringer loaded with squid, then turning on a dime at the last minute. I already had my Ocean Guardian shark shield turned on, as I knew I was making a fair amount of shark burley with the squid hunting. So, as soon as I swam to my stringer, the shark stayed well away… maybe 5-10m. Then I couldn’t see it… which was more disturbing.

Sadly, I didn’t get any good footage of the shark that measured bigger then me, as I fumbled around, turning my GoPro camera off and on, double/triple checking if my camera was on. I gotta say, it’s a bit of a different feeling being around small bronzies to one that could really pose a significant danger of a shark attack. Thankfully the shark shield did its job, and I had enough squid already.

Still, all part of the adventure, and I’m on their turf.
