The study focused on estimation of the effect of phonological ability on math achievement during the first year of schooling. The authors tested the hypothesis that this effect varied depending on students' socio-economic situation. They used two-wave longitudinal study which in contrast to previous research relied on a large sample of first-graders (2948 in total, 49% were girls and 51% were boys) in Tatar Republic, Russia.
The results revealed that phonological ability had a significant positive effect on math achievement even when reading achievement, number identification skills and socio-economic factors were controlled for. The effect of phonological ability was higher for students whose families had larger number of books at home and who used not only Russian language at home.
Research was conducted by Yulia Yulia, Alina Ivanova and Diana Kaiky from the
Centre for Monitoring Quality of Education, Higher School of Economics, Moscow.
