The catcher is arguably the most import position in baseball… and I’m not just saying that because I used to play it. These are the field generals, and the only player besides the pitcher who is involved in every play on the diamond.
To excel as a catcher you have to, by definition, be the smartest player on the diamond. You do just as much managing as the manager himself, something that makes the sheer number of catchers who became legendary managers make all the more sense.
However, catching is hard, and it chews up and spits out players like there’s no tomorrow, making it arguably the hardest position to excel at in baseball. This only makes those who were able to stand out at the position all the more special. These are, the Top 10 catchers in NPB history.
