This video demonstrates the entirety of the white belt joint lock curriculum for Kuk Sool Kwan, as taught by Grandmaster Michael Dunchok at Ancient Arts Dojang in Irvine, California.
White belts must be proficient in all ten skills of this technique set, known as the Sohn Mohk Soo (손목수) to advance to the yellow belt in the Kuk Sool Kwan curriculum. To aid in study, this video contains both a full speed demonstration as well as a slow demonstration of most techniques for easier reproduction of the movements.
Hapkido and specifically Kuk Sool joint locks are sourced in Japanese jujutsu, specifically Daito-ryu Aiki jujutsu. They were brought to Korea by the Japanese raised Korea Choi Yong Sool. Aikido, hapkido, and jujutsu techniques are not intended as "self defense scenarios," but rather as drills which serve as a reduction in all the physical variables in a grappling contest to a single point of contact -- in this case the wrist, to develop sensitivity and flow.
Kuk Sool Kwan is a member kwan of the Korea Hapkido Federation. At the time of this video's production, Grandmaster Michael Dunchok was a 7th dan in the Kuk Sool Kwan and a 7th dan in the KHF.
