Today we're talking about Sally Nolan Baker, a local nurse and businesswoman who was named Queen of America! Her childhood home was in Baxley, Georgia, and she began her pursuit of a nursing career by picking cotton put herself through school. She answered an advertisement by Consolidated Coal Company to work in the hospital in Jenkins, Kentucky. Two years later, she had married and moved to Pikeville to work at the Pikeville Medical Hospital. She spent her life there helping others and was ultimately recognized for those efforts by being named Queen of America and embarking on a European tour of post-World War II Europe, meeting royalty, and reporting back to her country on the progress of the Marshall Plan.
Special thanks to Mrs. Baker's granddaughter, Sarah Pugh, for providing various photographs.
