Built in 1890, the Fergus Falls State Hospital would serve as a mental health facility for a total of 115 years, repeatedly becoming Minnesota's largest mental institution in the process. Severely overcrowded, acutely neglected, and in physically deplorable conditions, it would come to house a total of 2,100 patients at its height in the 1950s, doing so in a space that had been designed and intended to contain less than half that number. Throughout all the years of its operations, over 40,000 inmates and patients would come through and inhabit its floors, rooms, halls, and wards.
