The February wind cut through Oakland Cemetery like a knife through silk, bitter and unforgiving. Eleanor Catherine Ashford stood at the graveside of Thomas William Ashford III, her hands trembling as they rested on her eight-month pregnant belly, watching the mahogany casket being lowered into frozen earth.
Her father-in-law—the man who had built Ashford Global Industries from a single manufacturing plant into a $60 billion empire spanning six continents—was being buried on the coldest day of the year. Behind her, her husband of three years, James William Ashford IV, stood rigid and distant, his arm conspicuously absent from around her shoulders despite her visible struggle with the weight of advanced pregnancy and the icy ground beneath her feet.
His mother, Victoria Ashford, stood to his right, her black Chanel suit immaculate, her expression carved from the same cold stone as the surrounding monuments.
