In this video we'll talk about the key differences between speech and language. And how understanding the differences can help you be sure you are using the right speech therapy strategies with your toddler.

The simplest way to think about the difference between speech and language is that language happens in the brain and speech happens in the mouth.

We use language to choose the right words and put them in the right order.
We use speech to actually say the words out loud.

When speech therapists talk about a child’s speech skills, they are referring to the way a child makes sounds and what sounds they can or can’t make.

Some common examples of speech issues treated by speech therapists include a lisp and trouble making the “R” sound. Both of these examples are issues with speech because they involve how a child is moving their tongue in their mouth.

Language on the other hand is a two way street and includes both what people understand and what they can express.

Common signs of a language delay in toddlers and children include: starting to talk late, not understanding as much as expected for their age, difficulty learning grammar, difficulty with reading comprehension, and difficulties telling stories.
