Complete description of Amber Fort
Introduction:
Amer Fort, also known as Amber Fort, is a historical fort located about 11 km from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. This fort is famous for its grand architecture, artistic murals, Sheesh Mahal, grand gates and historical importance. Amer Fort is situated on the hills of the Aravalli mountain range and is included as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
History
The construction of Amer Fort was started in the 16th century by Raja Mansingh I and later expanded by his successors—Jaisingh I and Sawai Jaisingh II. Earlier, Amer was the ruling area of the Meenas, but the Kachwaha Rajputs took it under their control. This fort is a unique confluence of Mughal and Rajput architecture.
Architecture and Structure
Amer Fort is famous for its amazing architecture. This fort is built of red sandstone and marble. The entrance to the fort is known as “Sooraj Pol” and “Chand Pol”.
1. Ganesh Pol
This is a beautiful and grand gate, which is decorated with colorful murals and Rajasthani style paintings. A small palace is also built above it.
2. Diwan-e-Aam
This is a huge hall, where the king used to meet the general public and listen to their problems. It is decorated with marble columns and latticed windows.
3. Diwan-e-Khas
This was a special meeting room, where the king used to hold secret talks with his special courtiers and guests.
4. Sheesh Mahal
This is the most famous part of the Amer Fort. Small mirrors are embedded on the walls and ceilings of Sheesh Mahal, which shimmer when light falls on them and the entire room is filled with light.
5. Sukh Niwas
This is a beautiful palace, where the atmosphere was kept cool through artificial water streams.
6. Jaleb Chowk
This is the main courtyard of the Amer Fort, where the king's army used to parade.
7. Jasmand Lake and Security of the Fort
Jasmand Lake is located near the Amer Fort, which was the main source of water supply to the fort. High walls and artillery were built to protect the fort.
How to reach?
• By air: Jaipur International Airport is about 25 km from Amer Fort.
• By rail: Amer Fort is located at a distance of about 13 km from Jaipur Railway Station.
• By Road: Amer Fort can be reached from Jaipur via taxi, bus or private vehicle.
Entry Fee and Timings
• For Indian tourists: ₹100
• For foreign tourists: ₹500
Time: 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Interesting Facts
1. Amer Fort is one of the three major forts of Jaipur (the other two being Jaigarh Fort and Nahargarh Fort).
2. Every evening a “Light and Sound Show” is organized here, in which the glorious history of Amer Fort is told.
3. There is a tunnel inside the fort, which leads to Jaigarh Fort. This tunnel was built for the safe exit of the royal family and soldiers during war times.
4. The mirrors on the walls of the Sheesh Mahal are installed in such a way that the whole room is filled with light by lighting just one lamp.
