2018 Kluge Prize Winner Drew Gilpin Faust discusses the value of the humanities and social sciences.
Speaker Biography: Raised in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, Drew Gilpin Faust attended Concord Academy in Massachusetts. She received her bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1968, and her master's and doctorate degrees in American civilization from the University of Pennsylvania. A prolific scholar, Faust has written six books including "A Sacred Circle: The Dilemma of the Intellectual in the Old South, 1840-1860," "James Henry Hammond and the Old South: A Design for Mastery," "The Creation of Confederate Nationalism: Ideology and Identity in the Civil War South," "Southern Stories: Slaveholders in Peace and War," "Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War" and "This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War." Faust's other honors include honorary doctorates from Bowdoin College, Peking University, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, Princeton University, Oxford University, University of Maryland Baltimore County and Boston College. Faust has been included in the Forbes Magazine list of 100 Most Powerful Women, and the National Endowment for the Humanities selected her to give the Jefferson Lecture in 2011.
