You won’t believe this trail’s upgrades

Kicking off from Werribee Station, I rolled the full 23km of the Federation Trail, one of Melbourne’s OG bike paths. The route follows the old outfall sewer, now reimagined as a green corridor by the Greening the Pipeline project. Urban grit slowly transforms the wide open plains, wetlands and eventually the Maribyrnong River Trail, where this mission wrapped up.
The newly resurfaced tarmac sections from Millers Road to Kororoit Creek and Brooklyn, ride smoother than your local barista’s flat white, BUT the trail’s full glow-up isn’t done yet. I got a glimpse of the West Gate Tunnel Project’s elevated path connecting Fogarty Avenue to Hyde Street in Yarraville (not open yet - but did you spot the Pam 🐦)? It will eventually link up to the new veloway (also, not open yet) on Footscray Road into the Melbourne Docklands.
Landmarks include the Kororoit Creek, a tunnel under the Western Ring Road freeway, RAAF Williams (Laverton base), Lawrie Emmins Reserve, Skeleton Creek, Werribee Mercy Hospital, Victoria University (Werribee campus), Wyndham Park, Werribee Park, Werribee Open Range Zoo and the Werribee River.
Whether you’re on a gravel bike, roadie, handcycle, e-bike or your trusty commuter, if it’s got wheels, it’ll roll. If you’re into Melbourne’s bike trails, infrastructure upgrades and a bit of exploration, this one’s calling your name.
