Would you ride this Melbourne Loop?

Is this Melbourne’s best bike loop? The Capital City Trail, is a 29km shared bike path through the heart of Melbourne’s inner suburbs. I started things off (and ended) at Dights Falls, heading clockwise past creeks, parks, the Main Yarra Trail, Docklands, Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and the Merri Creek Trail.
I pedalled over the new Footscray Road bridge (again) this time creek-bound, which now makes the loop feel cohesive. It’s a S-tier Melbourne bike ride for beginners, commuters, tourists and lycra missiles. You can smash out the whole ride under a couple hours, just keep your eyes peeled at those tight underpasses, it’s like a game of tetris in there or a wet paint slip 'n slide.
If you're into train history, parts of this route used to be actual railway lines, including the old branch line to Fitzroy Station. Back in the day, timber and briquettes were hauled through here without flashing lights or boom gates, just a person waving a flag and hoping cars would stop. With over a million riders counted near here each year and after years of red tape, near misses and eyebrow-raising detours, bikes and pedestrians have finally been awarded priority at Rae Street.
So, what’s it like to ride the full Capital City Trail? It’s Melbourne in a loop, a mix of riversides, industrial might, green pockets, abandoned railway lines and every kind of coffee in between. Get onya bike and give it a go!
