Take a step inside Fadden’s General Store & Maple Sugarhouse in North Woodstock, New Hampshire — a family-run landmark that has been serving the White Mountains since 1896.
In this video, Bart King sits down with the late Jim Fadden (James Hill Fadden Jr., 1954–2018), a sixth-generation maple producer and longtime owner of Fadden’s General Store, to hear his memories of growing up in the store, running the maple operation, and carrying on the Fadden family legacy. Jim worked alongside his wife, Sue, and their sons James and John, along with other hired help, who, together, produced thousands of gallons of maple syrup each season.
The Fadden story stretches back to the early 1800s, when the family first began harvesting maple sap for their own use. In the 1930s, they built a larger sugarhouse and transitioned into full commercial production, a tradition that continues just off Main Street today. Over the years, Fadden’s Sugarhouse has earned multiple top honors for its syrup, including the prestigious Lawrence A. Carlisle Memorial Trophy for the best New Hampshire-made maple syrup.
Filmed among the squeaky wooden floors, original counters, and maple sugaring museum that make Fadden’s feel like a step back in time, this interview preserves Jim Fadden’s stories for future generations — from life behind the counter to boiling sap in the sugarhouse on cold March nights.
