The decade spanning the middle of the 1920s and 1930s saw Louis Armstrong come into his own, leading the way forward with nearly unmatched virtuosity on the trumpet combined with an advanced sense of rhythm, harmony and melody that is equally evident in his vocal performances. His 1928 recording of West End Blues is a historical landmark—countless trumpet players have learned his opening cadenza that hints at the chromatic language of bebop to emerge two decades later. We hear his strong musical connection with Earl Hines on this recording and also in a fantastic duet performance of Weatherbird from the same year. A trio of performances from 1933 exemplify everything that makes Louis Armstrong great, on so many levels.
