Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the AUKUS partnership does "three things" for Australia.
On Thursday it was announced Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States have entered a strategic alliance which will see Australia acquire a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.
"First, it gives us a vastly more credible strategic deterrent, because nuclear submarines are immeasurably more effective," Mr Abbott told Sky News host Catherine McGregor.
"Second, it brings back Britain into our region, it's good to see Britain east of Suez once again.
"Third, and very importantly, by joining the nuclear-powered submarine club, Australia will be a much more significant member of the western alliance than ever before."
