Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the AUKUS alliance is the “biggest decision” any Australian government has made in decades.
The trilateral military pact will see Australia harness technology from the United States and the United Kingdom to manufacture nuclear-powered submarines.
“It’s a brave decision because it overturns decades of strategic caution,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“And it’s an important decision because it indicates that we are going to stand shoulder to shoulder with the United States and the United Kingdom in meeting the great strategic challenge of our time, which obviously is China.”
Mr Abbott said now the challenge will be to get the submarines in the water as quickly as possible because “time is not on our side”.
