Among the long winters that marked eastern Tennessee at the end of the 19th century, few documents are as recurrent — and as uncomfortable — as those that mention the Cumberland Widow's Snow Chamber, a makeshift underground room used as an emergency shelter by travelers surprised by the sudden storms that swept the region between December and March.
The most complete account from that time describes the winter of 1890 as one of the harshest since the fires of 1871. Local newspapers reported that the wind blowing down from the Cumberland Hills “screamed like wood being twisted,” and that dry snow covered the region like dust, accumulating in suffocating layers on trails, small farms, and isolated barns.
