Sören Sieg: Timkat. An African Celebration. Sinfonisches Orchester Arbon, Dirigent: Leo Gschwend.

Timkat is the Amharic word for 'baptism'. It is Ethiopia's largest religious and national festival. It commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. Ethiopians view this event as marking the beginning of Christianity and, consequently, the formation of their nation, which they consider to be the oldest Christian nation in the world. Every year on 18 and 19 January, for two days, thousands, hundreds of thousands and even millions of people throughout the country parade through the streets in magnificent white robes, singing and dancing in traditional styles. I experienced this celebration in Addis Ababa in 2016, and it was overwhelming. The marimba, an instrument originating from Africa, plays a particularly important role. Its strings often play pizzicato, reminiscent of African plucked instruments.
Just as the celebration is divided into solemn striding for an hour, the procession itself and singing and dancing (usually in a circle with props), Timkat also has two themes: a solemn striding theme in 3/2 time and an exuberant dancing theme in a 'rolling groove' of 18/8 time. The processional theme progresses harmonically up the steps from the first to the fourth and fifth, building tension throughout the piece. In contrast, the dance theme, referencing the circle dances, always leads directly back to the tonic via the subdominant and dominant. Melodically, it follows a call-and-response pattern. Just as individual dancers have short solos in the circle dance, the violin, oboe, clarinet, trumpet and flute each have short solos. Shortly before the end, after a long, virtuoso marimba solo, there is a collective vision: a 'flashback' to the moment when Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist.
The piece concludes with an intensification of the dance theme, with everyone joining in at the end.
I have known and appreciated Arbon for 25 years, from the cycle tours I took around Lake Constance with my children to the performances I gave in the castle with my a cappella group, LaLeLu. I am delighted that TIMKAT has received its premiere as part of the Arbon Symphony Orchestra's wonderful AFRIKA programme nine years after its composition. Timkat (ጥምቀት; [t'ɨmk'ət]) heißt auf amharisch Taufe. Es ist das größte religiöse und nationale Fest Äthiopiens. Gefeiert wird die Taufe Jesu im Jordan. Diesen Moment verstehen die Äthiopier als Beginn des Christentums und damit auch der Nation Äthiopiens, die sich als älteste christliche Nation der Welt versteht. Zwei Tage lang, jedes Jahr am 18. und 19. Januar, ziehen Tausende, Hunderttau-sende, im ganzen Land Millionen Menschen prachtvoll geschmückt in weißen Gewän-dern durch die Straßen, singend und tänzelnd, nach bestimmten traditionellen Formen. Ich habe diese Feier 2016 in Addis Abeba erlebt, der Eindruck war überwältigend. Die Marimba als ursprünglich afrikanisches Instrument spielt eine besonders wichtige Rolle. Die Streicher spielen oft pizzicato, das an afrikanische Zupfinstrumente erinnern soll.
So wie die Feier sich gliedert in das feierliche, stundenlange Schreiten, die Prozession selbst, und das Singen und Tanzen (meist im Kreis mit bestimmten Requisiten), so hat auch Timkat zwei Themen: ein feierlich schreitendes im 3/2-Takt und ein tänzerisch-ausgelassenes im „rollenden Groove“ eines 18/8-Takts. Das Prozessionsthema schreitet harmonisch die Stufen von der ersten zur vierten und fünften Stufe hoch und baut so über das ganze Stück hindurch eine Spannung auf. Das tänzerische Thema dagegen führt – als Referenz zu den Kreistänzen – immer unmittelbar über Subdominante und Dominante wieder zur Tonika zurück. Melodisch folgt es dem Call and Response Schema. Geige, Oboe, Klarinette, Trompete und Flöte haben kurze Soli – so wie im Kreistanz einzelne Tänzer kurze Soli haben. Kurz vor Schluss, nach einem langen und virtuosen Marimba-Solo, kommt es zu einer Art kollektiven Vision, einem „Rückblick“ zu dem Moment, an dem Jesus sich von Johannes taufen ließ. Das Stück endet mit einer Steigerung des Tanzthemas: Am Ende tanzen alle mit.
Arbon kenne und schätze ich seit 25 Jahren – von meinen Bodenseeradtouren mit meinen Kindern und meinen Auftritten im Schloss mit meiner a-cappella-Gruppe LaLeLu. Ich freue mich sehr, dass TIMKAT hier im Rahmen des AFRIKA-Programms des Sinfonischen Orchesters Arbon neun Jahre nach seiner Komposition seine würdige Uraufführung erhalten hat, und möchte dafür dem ganzen Orchester danken, und besonders dem Dirigenten Leo Gschwend!
