Malpas English Village Walk | Cheshire | English Countryside | 4K

This lovely afternoon walk is around the beautiful medieval village of Malpas in Cheshire, England. After the Norman Conquest of 1066 Malpas is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name Malpas is French for 'bad road', describing the area as always vulnerable to raids from the Welsh. The motte and bailey castle that once stood here has long gone but the stunning 14th century church of St Oswald's, which probably started as the castles chapel, now stands roughly were it used to be towering over the village just as a castle would. This beautiful church has steps and ornate gates leading to the churchyard which has walled paths and lovely views across the village. We headed inside the church today with its beautiful interior including the medieval painted and gilded ceiling, amazing stained glass windows and Lewis organ. At the centre of the village is the cross which was the main area of the village fairs and markets. The current structure dates from 1877 as a memorial to a former Malpas rector. The previous medieval market cross was removed from the steps about 200 years ago. Many of the buildings around the village are Grade I or II listed buildings. Some of the ones we pass today are the large black and white building of The Victoria Jubilee Hall which was built in 1888 to commemorate the then Queen's 50 year reign. Market house with its 8 classic pillars was built in the 1760's and provided cover for weekly butter markets for about 100 years. The lovely black and white building just past the church is the Tithe Barn and dates from probably the 17th century. It stored the taxes in kind, whether crops or livestock and is now a private house. Our walk ends overlooking the beautiful Cheshire countryside that surrounds this lovely village.
