Installing Märklin Brake Module 72442/72441 using M83 60832/60831 (Beginner Episode 12a)

This video describes the Märklin 72442/72441 braking module (aka brake module aka signal module). It is describes how it works, the principles behind it, Tips'n'Tricks and how to install & wire it. It is described how to use the M83/braking module combo with the Mobile Station 2 (MS2) and the Central Station 3 (CS3). Additionally, it is show how to change the braking delay / dec(eleration).

This video shows you how install the Märklin braking module with the M83. In the video the Märklin 72442 brake module and the Märklin 60832 M83 is used. However, you can use the Märklin 72441 brake module and/or the Märklin 60831 M83 in the same way.

ALWAYS do the installation with POWER OFF, read the manual and safety instructions. Remember to connect the wires correctly to each section.

You also need:
Plugs: 5xRed, 1xBrown, 1xGreen, 1xYellow (see below)
Solder or use C-track spade connectors (Märklin 74995)
Blue wire (Märklin 7101)
Yellow wire (Märklin 7103)
Red wire (Märklin 7105)
Brown wire (Märklin 7102)
Track insulators (for C-track Märklin 74030)

• Tip: The transition section must be at least the length of your longest slider
• Tip: The lengths of the braking/stop sections must be sufficient for braking
• Tip: Each section is insulated on the "B" (aka the Red or center rail)
• Tip: "S" is the transition section
• Tip: Locomotive sound and light still works with the braking module
• Tip: The braking is the normal decoder braking sequence when speed set to 0
• Tip: Locomotive must be above a speed threshold to initiate brake sounds
• Tip: Braking delay can change the braking distance (+=longer, -=shorter)
• Tip: Change the braking delay of each locomotive to make them stop the same place
• Tip: Have the locomotive slide at the front wo coordinate stopping point
• Tip: Braking delay is called "Dec(eleration)" in the Mobile Station 2 (MS2)
• Tip: When the decoder gets digital/track power after braking it will resume previous speed
• Tip: The decoder must support the Märklin braking module
• Tip: The decoder must have detection of Märklin brake module turned on
• Tip: For reliability consider turning off DC power in the decoder
• Tip: Modern Märklin is prepared for the Märklin braking module
• Tip: Test all trains and decoders with the braking module
• Tip: You can power the M83 and braking module from the track or power bus
• Tip: When powering from track you might have to add a "B"/"Red" bypass wire
• Tip: The M83 must be as when taken out of the box - reset if you changed it
• Tip: Connect wires to the same side of the track in case you have contact tracks
