Dr. Fergal Finnegan "The Production of Space and Critical Adult Education" (STRAE 2023 - 03.04.2023)

In this presentation titled "The Production fo Space and Critical Adult Education", Dr. Fergal Finnegan explores ways of conceptualising social space in relation to domination and emancipation and makes a case that this is important for a critical theory of adult education. Critical adult education has explored time and history in various ways but has largely, but not completely, neglected space. To develop a critical realist understanding of space and time in adult education Dr. Finnegan draws on Pierre Bourdieu and Henry Lefebvre. He outlines some of the key ideas of these thinkers and makes a case that the commonalities and differences between Lefebvre and Bourdieu can be used generatively to explore two fundamental questions. First, to help us theorise how domination is reproduced through social space. Secondly, to develop an integrated theory of time and space sensitised to the pulse of freedom, that is to small and large forms of emancipation. He then links this to critical adult education research including participatory research on space and place. He concludes with making a case that a critical theory of space can be combined with a Freirean approach to epistemology and community which acknowledges the complex, deeply layered production of space as well as being attuned to emancipatory possibilities. Dans cette présentation intitulée "La production de l'espace et la formation critique des adultes", Dr. Fergal Finnegan explore les manières de conceptualiser l'espace social en lien avec les enjeux de domination et d'émancipation et montre l'importance de cette dimension pour envisager une théorie critique de la formation des adultes. En formation des adultes, des approches critiques ont exploré le temps et l'histoire de différentes manières, toutefois, l'espace est demeuré largement, mais pas complètement, négligé. Pour développer une compréhension réaliste et critique de l'espace et du temps en formation des adultes, Dr. Finnegan s'appuie sur les contributions de Pierre Bourdieu et de Henri Lefebvre.
