MBZ To Visit India: How India and the UAE Are Shaping a New Geopolitical Partnership

The visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to New Delhi is far more than a routine diplomatic engagement. It underscores how India and the UAE have quietly built one of India’s most consequential strategic partnerships over the past decade. Rooted in centuries-old trading links across the Arabian Sea, the relationship has evolved into a multi-dimensional alliance spanning trade, energy, defence, technology, finance and geopolitics.

The turning point came with the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in 2022. Since then, bilateral trade has surged, with non-oil trade touching nearly 38 billion dollars in just the first half of 2025. Both sides are now targeting 100 billion dollars in non-oil trade by 2030. CEPA has boosted Indian exports while accelerating UAE investments in Indian infrastructure, startups, logistics and renewable energy.

Beyond economics, defence cooperation has deepened through joint military exercises and maritime coordination. Financial innovation, including rupee-dirham trade and UPI integration, signals a shift toward future-facing cooperation. Anchored by a 3.5 million-strong Indian diaspora and shared global ambitions, the India-UAE partnership stands out as pragmatic, trust-driven and strategically aligned in an uncertain world.
