India’s manufacturing woes: Rahul Gandhi’s prescription for job creation

Speaking at Berlin’s Hertie School, Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi warned that democracies are struggling to create jobs after allowing China to dominate global manufacturing. He said countries like India, the US and Europe cannot rely on services alone and must rebuild production to sustain economic growth and political stability.
Rahul Gandhi argued that manufacturing remains the only way to create jobs at scale in India. He said India has the population, cost advantage and capability to produce but failed to strengthen its industrial base. Linking job losses to political polarisation, he said the erosion of employment threatens democratic systems worldwide.
Criticising the BJP government, Rahul Gandhi blamed demonetisation, a producer-unfriendly GST structure and weakened MSMEs for the decline in manufacturing’s share of GDP. He called for stronger production partnerships between India, the US and Europe to counter China’s dominance and revive democratic supply chains.
