Joined the cabinet for the first time in the first Abe cabinet in 2006. Became Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications in the second Abe cabinet in 2014, the longest tenure of a Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications in history. Minister of Economic Security in 2022. Ran for the second time in the LDP presidential election in 2012.
