Short and sweet, this is a musical interlude from André Campra's opera Idoménée, Act Three, Scene Six. The opera takes the form of a tragédie en musique in a prologue and five acts. Idoménée was first performed on 12 January 1712 by the Académie royale de musique at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in Paris. The libretto, by Antoine Danchet, is based on a stage play by Crébillon père. It later formed the basis of Giambattista Varesco's libretto for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Idomeneo.
The second of this pair of Rigaudons is a trio for oboes and bassoon, after which the first is repeated as was customary.
André Camera (1660-1744) was the leading French opera composer between Lully and Rameau. He was born in Aix-en-Provence, eventually moving to Paris in 1694, spending a period as maître de musique at Notre Dame. He died in Versailles at the age of 83.
