Italian sentries notice suspicious moonlit shadows moving through the Benghazi night, down by the harbor that supplies General Rommel’s entire North African campaign.

Suddenly, one of the strangers strides toward the main harbor gate, signalling to the commander in charge of guarding it. The sentries exchange confused glances.

As they hear the man yelling in Italian, they immediately realize their mistake. He’s no enemy - he’s an officer of the General Staff, reprimanding the commander for his lax security. What if he and his men had been Allied saboteurs planting explosives?

Embarrassed, the commander apologizes. The General Staff officer begins walking through the gate, scolding the guards for their scruffy appearance as he passes.

Yet he’s really praying nobody notices his own uniform - it’s British.
